Open studios to discover the contemporary art

Strozzina projectFLORENCE, ITALY – Organized and curated by the Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina in the regional project toscanaincontemporanea, Open Studios is a two years project – started in 2009 – which allowe to discover the places of contemporary art through visits to the studios of artists who live and work in the provinces of Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Pisa and Siena.

The artists have opened their studios, private places and generally inaccessible to a diverse audience, creating opportunities for informal dialogue and discussion on contemporary artistic practices.

After the second year of scheduled calendar, the project maintains the possibility to organize free tours with the artists involved in both editions. Reservation required, groups of at least 8 people.

With a selection of artists born between the 50s and 80s, the project traces a broad overview of current research art: painting, photography, video, installations, performances, public art projects and research in the field of music and sound.

The project acts as an interface between the artistic production of the area, its residents and cultural operators, also from international contexts, creating connections with the network of contemporary art.

The mediators involved in the art project to assist the artists during their visits, were selected after a training course dedicated to graduate and undergraduate students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and at the Faculty of Humanities (address historical and artistic) of the University of Florence, Siena and Pisa.

The video documentation of the meetings was made by: ISIA – Institute for Industrial Arts in Florence and the Department of Art History at the University of Pisa.
