Ambone, rejected projects of great architects

Santa_Maria_del_FioreFLORENCE, ITALY – The realization of the “Ambone”, a sort of new pulpit, in the Duomo of Florence remains an open question. “The jury, considering the importance of the work, is not having reached a reasonable unanimity of judgment, held that none of the projects presented is worthy of achievement, while appreciating the efforts and intentions of artists and architects” participants, including Mario Botta, Massimo Lippi, Mimmo Paladino, Philip Smith, and Paul Henry Savelli Zermani.

The intention to create special provisions for the proclamation of the liturgical homilies in space was the period of construction of the Cathedral, September 22, 1366.

In 2010, under the auspices of Archbishop Giuseppe Betori, the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore has thus launched a competition to calls for the creation of a pulpit in the Cathedral, in the spirit of the law arising from the liturgical reform of Vatican II and specified by subsequent documents of the Italian Episcopal Conference, as noted by the same Cardinal Betori intervention delivered in 2009.
