Frequented by 160 thousand persons per day, 59 million per year, Santa Maria Novella is a “main” station located right inside the city centre, in piazza della Stazione, and a primary hub in Firenze’s public transport system. It hosts over 400 trains per day and is a major intersection point for many bus and taxi lines.
Through the years, box-partitions and extensions for commercial facilities and services have been installed in the Firenze station that have considerably reduced the perception of its spatial harmonies and detrimentally affected significant portions of this important and both historically and architecturally very valuable building complex. According to “Grandi stazioni”, the new project – designed by Marco Tamino – foresees in the first place the restoration and valorisation of its spatial values and historic finishings by eliminating all the cluttered additions accumulated through the years.
