The Port of Miami, Florida, called the Tuscan artist Giampaolo Talani to design a bronze statue of a ‘Sailor’, about 18 meters high. The statue will be placed on the point that separates the two branches of the U.S. port.
The ‘Sailor’ is already an icon for Miami. The statue was chosen as a symbol of town twinning between the Port of Livorno and the Port of Miami during the celebrations for the 500 years since the death of Amerigo Vespucci.
The Port of Miami Director Bill Johnson’s was inspired by the 7-meter high ‘Sailor’ of Talani, the bronze statue at the port of San Vincenzo (Livorno).
The project will be made official in a ceremony Jan. 25 in Miami harbor. The new bronze statue of Talani should be melted in the province of Florence, then it will embarked from the port of Livorno to reach the city of Miami. The statue will be placed at the tip between the commercial and tourist port.
The Miami-Dade County Commission has approved the Port of Miami’s purchase of four additional Super-Post Panamax cranes. The new cranes are necessary to accommodate the larger containerized cargo vessels that will traverse the expanded Panama Canal in 2014. The Port of Miami currently has nine cranes, two of which are Super-Post-Panamax cranes.
