Snow in Florence on March 1, 2018

Florence and Tuscany woke up with snow

FLORENCE, ITALY – Fresh snowfalls early on Thursday March 1st, 2018 hit northern and central Italy, causing further disruption, especially for transport.

Cities registering the most snow on Thursday morning included Turin, Cuneo, Bologna, Parma and Reggio Emilia, as well as in Milan, Florence and Genoa, among others.

In Florence, where around 2 centimeters fell, schools were given a snow day. There was even heavier snowfall across other parts of Tuscany, where the region’s rolling hills and even the beaches of its north-west coast were covered.

The A1 motorway between between Arezzo and Chiusi was closed on Thursday morning because of the icy conditions, but reopened around an hour later.

The worst disruption was to the rail network, with half of all regional trains cancelled in Piedmont, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Liguria and Tuscany. Four other regions – Lombardy, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Le Marche and Lazio – had only 70 percent of services, and the Milan-Rome-Naples high-speed line was running at 80 percent.

On Friday March 2 the situation is expected to return completely normal, even if the severe temperatures will continue for some days.

Authorities in the coastal city have pointed the finger at the civil protection department and weathermen for allegedly not alerting them to the flood danger. Four of the victims were members of the same family who were trapped by flood waters in their basement.
