FLORENCE, ITALY – The city of Florence unveiled a new tram line from the central rail station to the Careggi Hospital. The first line was opened in 2010 to link the central station with the neighboring comune of Scandicci. The two lines are now a unique link from Scandicci to Careggi.
“It’s an unforgettable day,” said Mayor Dario Nardella, who said it had set a record in being built in under four years. Thousands of people attended the inauguration.
The Florence tramway network is an important part of the public transport network of Florence, Italy. It consists of one operational light rail line; a new line is currently under construction to link the city center with the airport. Some moths in late, it scheduled to open to the end of 2018.
The current network operator is GEST (Gestione Servizio tramviario), a public company owned by ATAF (49%) and RATPdev (51%), subsidiary of the French RATP.
An efficient integration between the train and one of the major elements of a national transportation system is the result of an agreement between Trenitalia and the taxi company Florentine SOCOTA thanks to Florence Convention Bureau, which favored the meeting between the two companies.
