Alchemy of colours, an exhibition dedicated to the particular scagliola technique, all to be admired this autumn. What is scagliola? It is made from a mineral called selenite, which gives life to incredible artifacts. Scagliola has been known since ancient times as it was used to embellish architectural elements in sacred art and has become part of Florentine handicrafts.
Mafia animals will go in a WWF center
A wildlife reserve in southern Tuscany hosting exotic animals that once belonged to mafia owners will soon be opening its gates to the public. Tigers once pampered as cubs but dumped as adults, unruly monkeys, lions and more are guests at the Center for Rescued Wild and Exotic Animals run by the international environmental organisation WWF.

The International Week for Cultural and Environmental Heritage, Florens 2012, is scheduled to take place in Florence from November 3 to 11. Cultural directors include Mauro Agnoletti, Andrea Carandini and Walter Santagata, with Davide Rampello as artistic director.

The Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi has set up this small permanent exhibition to give the public insight into the history of the Palazzo where the Foundation is housed. Eight panels give an account of the fortunes of the Strozzi from the fourteenth century to the present day while a genealogical tree helps the visitor understand the complexity of the family’s various noble connections.

One of Italian cycling’s all-time greats, Fiorenzo Magni, died Friday aged 91. Nicknamed the Lion of Flanders, Magnia was the ‘third man’ of Italian cycling’s heroic era, vying with Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali.
Starhotels becomes a FAI corporate donor
The Florence-based hotels company Starhotels becomes a FAI corporate donor. “Since its start up in 1980, this hotel group has stood for Italian values and style and seen its main mission as that of cultivating and exporting our country’s identity and culture.”, chairmen Elisabetta Fabri said.
EU wins the Nobel prize, American students react
On Friday, October 12th 2012, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the esteemed Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union. It is interesting to see how American students reacted to the news. It is important to recall that President Barak Obama won the Noble Peace Prize in 2009. Students have been comparing the two, in an attempt to understand the logic behind the committee’s decision.
